I ascribe to Mark Twain's theory that the last person who should be President is the one who wants it the most. The one who should be picked is the one who should be dragged kicking and screaming into the White House.

About This Quote

Mark Twain is known as the father of American literature, and this quote is a simple and true statement by the man. The right person for the job should not be denied because they do not want it - as long as they are willing to work hard at their position. In other words, people who don’t want to serve the country should not be allowed to serve in office. People who fight to make their own country better should be recognized as those who deserve a shot.

The important point here is that a desire for power, even a strong one, is not enough for a person to deserve a position of power. Have you ever met a person who was ambitious and wanted power but were unable to achieve the position due to other factors? Maybe they lacked talent or maybe they were too ambitious and got into trouble along the way. In any case, it takes more than just desire for power to make a good leader.
